We’re in Montreal this weekend for my sister’s engagement party, and then on Monday I drive to Carrying Place, Prince Edward County, Ontario (south of Trenton, which is just past Belleville) to pick up 25 Chantecler chicks.
So today I set up their (temporary) home. They’ll be in the garage for the first 4-6 weeks of their lives, and for the first week or so in a large cardboard box under a heat lamp:
Heat lamp – check: see photo
Remote temperature sensor – check: our old wireless outdoor thermometer’s sensor (so I can check the temp without going into the garage every 10 minutes)
Bedding – check: paper towel for the first week
Waterer – check: you can kinda see it in the corner of the photo
Food tray – pick up from Monkland feed store on Monday morning (or use an egg carton)
Food – check: 50kg of organic chick starter food from Homestead Organics
…and most importantly my copy of “Storey’s Guide to Raising Chickens.”
My next post will be Tuesday, and with any luck, will feature pictures of incredibly cute little fluffy baby chicks.
I am somewhat ashamed to admit that I am very, very excited about watching this venture unfold. I shouldn’t be this gushy about baby chicks becoming Real Chickens somewhere where I can (sort of) see it happen.
