On August 30th, 2008, my husband and I moved from a city-centre duplex in Ville-Emard, Montreal, Quebec, to a six-acre homestead on Robinson’s Corners Road, just south of Maxville, Ontario, with our two cats, Grimshackle, a Norwegian forest cat, and Saash, a mackerel tabby moggie.
In December 2008 we acquired Carter, a one-year-old collie-husky puppy.
In May 2009 we began our poultry flock with 25 Chantecler chicks, and planted a small fruit orchard of heritage apple, cherry, and plum trees.
On June 15th, 2009 we said a tearful goodbye to Grimshackle and buried him under the poplar tree to the east of the house.
On September 18th, 2010 we acquired Whiskey, a South Stormont Barn Cat via a “Kittens free to a good home” ad in our local online agricultural newsletter.
On March 12, 2011 we added three bantam hens to our flock of chickens, in hopes that one of them would brood our Chantecler eggs.
In May, 2012 we planted 23 new fruit and nut trees in the orchard, some as replacements for ones that had died, and some new trees. The orchard now has over 30 apple, pear, peach, plum, cherry, mulberry, rowan, chestnut, hazelnut, and walnut trees.
We’re busy planting a garden, and hope to eventually get a couple of pigs, and generally live the good (simple) life.
